They Weren’t Just Roommates… They Became My Family
🌙 Strangers, Roommates, Soul Sisters: The Girls Who Made Hostel Feel Like Home
When I first entered my hostel room, I was exhausted — physically and emotionally.
I was homesick, nervous, and overwhelmed. Sitting on my bed were three girls I’d never seen before, quietly arranging their things. One from Karnataka, one from Andaman, and one from Tamil Nadu. They didn’t even look up.
I’m from Kerala, and this was my first time away from home, in a city where everything felt unfamiliar — the language, the people, even the air.
My first thought?
"They look so serious… are they going to be mean?"
I had arrived late, so I didn’t get much choice with the room setup. I got the smallest cupboard, no personal table, and a bed squeezed into a corner. I kept my bag down and stood there for a few seconds, wondering what I’d gotten myself into.
💫 A Lost Earring, A Found Bond
That evening, I lost my earring. In all the mess and chaos of settling in, I dropped it somewhere and started panicking. It might seem like a small thing, but in that moment, it was the last straw. I was on the verge of crying.
Before I could even ask, all three of them got up and helped me look for it — without hesitation.
That one small act of kindness changed everything.
We started talking — slowly at first. Then suddenly, we were laughing. Sharing stories. We even played truth or dare that night. From strangers to roommates, we started becoming something more.
🧚♀️ Meet My Girls
-
The Girl from Karnataka
Quiet, mature, and always observing. She doesn’t talk much, but when she does — it’s meaningful. She’s the one who’ll remind us to keep the room neat and carry essentials no one else remembers. -
The Girl from Andaman
A full-time drama queen — in the best way! Loud, energetic, always singing or dancing. She’s the life of our room and can cheer anyone up in seconds. -
The Tamil Nadu Girl
Chill and grounded. The peace-maker of the group. She doesn’t get involved in unnecessary drama and always shares her snacks when someone’s hungry at midnight.
Together, we make a weird mix — but somehow, it works.
💌 What Hostel Friendship Really Looks Like
It’s sharing:
-
Chargers, beds, clothes, shampoo
-
Secrets under blankets
-
Cravings and midnight Maggi
It’s:
-
Fighting over someone leaving the fan on all night
-
Crying over homesickness
-
Laughing till your stomach hurts over the most random jokes
We’ve comforted each other during sickness, supported each other during emotional breakdowns, and stood by each other on tough days.
They’ve seen me when I was at my lowest — crying quietly at night, missing my family, struggling to adjust. And they didn’t leave.
They sat with me. Listened. Distracted me with silly jokes. Hugged me when I didn’t ask for it.
🏠 From Hostel Room to Home
This room may be small, congested, and sometimes chaotic. But these girls?
They’ve made it feel like home.
They’ve become my daily therapists, unofficial sisters, and the best part of this hostel life.
And to anyone scared of hostel life:
Don’t worry.
You might feel lonely at first. You might cry. You might miss home like crazy.
But someday soon, you’ll find your people too — the ones who see you at your worst and still stay.
Just like mine did. 💖
📝 Stay tuned...
